I was saved! I was saved! I was saved!

I tried to rein my feelings in and bring myself back under control, but it wasn't easy. I had given up. I was so sure that all hope was lost, but then my tormentor, the absolute bane of my existence, had handed me my salvation. If we could confirm that this map was accurate and correct, we would have enough data to increase the sheets we sent to the home office and hire more people.

I pulled the headset off and pushed out of the holographic communicator. “Jogh, did you get what I just sent you?”

“Yes, sir. Is this…”

She trailed off, but I understood. I’d just sent her a massive transfer of information. Takahashi had been wrong. It wasn’t hundreds of systems but thousands. There were hundreds of thousands of planets. It was enough data—I couldn’t finish that thought. I couldn’t get my hopes up. We needed to figure out the best way to confirm it. If it couldn’t be done in time, before we had to close down the company, then it wouldn’t matter. All this information would go to the corporation that ended up buying the Valiant’s contract.

“We need to figure out the best way to check that this is valid.”

“Uhuh.”

She was already running it through an algorithm that should pinpoint the best possible hyperspace drops to make, but it was so much data it was going to take time.

I paced. I worried. I jumped from relief to dismay and then back again.

“Are there any anomalies?”

Distracted by what she was doing, it took a moment for Jogh to reply. “Um, yeah, it looks like there are a couple.”

I leaned over her and stared at the screen. If we could confirm one of those that could be big on its own, it might be enough to keep us open for a little while longer.

“Which one is closest to the Valiant?”

She gave me a look over her shoulder, and I backed off. The computer was processing right now, and if I kept asking her questions, it was just going to take longer. I paced away. Then back. Then away again.

“Sir, are you alright?”

Alee seemed concerned, and I tried to pull myself off the roller coaster of emotion I was riding. I took a deep breath and turned away from them. My eyes closed briefly, and when they opened again, I had control.

Turning back, I said, “If we can confirm that this map is accurate and up to the level of detail that we require, it will allow us to stay open indefinitely.”

They nodded their heads, but either they didn’t care, or they didn’t understand. It was probably a mixture of both.

Finding a map like this didn’t happen every day. It was a once-in-a-lifetime find. Well, maybe not that rare, but it coming when it did, when our corporation was on the brink of collapse, now that was once in a lifetime.

Should I contact Leader Broder and let him know?

No.

Better to wait until it’s at least partially confirmed.
